Intel® Active Management Technology (Intel® AMT) is a hardware built-in manageability and security system for remote management, repair, and protection of computing assets1. Intel® AMT delivers a wealth of powerful functionality that works independent of the operating system:

Remote Control (KVM). Generally used to provide administrator access to remotely control a device (video, keyboard, mouse) with or without operating system, including turning device on/off, rebooting, and accessing BIOS interfaces.

IDE Redirect. One of the most powerful features - it allows an administrator to remotely “mount” a virtual CD ROM drive and cause the device to boot from it. This can be used to fix operating system problems, scan the entire hard drive for malware, or restore a device to clean state.

Agent watchdog. Intel® AMT monitors the presence of software running in the operating system, for example a security agent. It notifies a remote administrator or an automated system if software is no longer running.

System defense. Operator can monitor network traffic going to and from a managed device. If needed, operator can throttle or drop unwanted packets on transmit, receive, or both. This functionality helps prevent proliferation of dangerous malware, and can stop any unwanted device communications regardless of the operating system.

Event log and alerts. Management software can read a log of recent hardware events that occurred including failures, reboots, intrusions, and more. This functionality helps proactively stop intrusions, perform forensic audits, and solve maintenance problems before they occur.

Hardware inventory. Allows management software to enumerate the hardware components within a device. This is useful to keep track of hardware assets within a business.

Connectivity, Security and Manageability Beyond the Operating System

Active Management Cloud (AMC) implements new delivery and infrastructure concepts providing first-class Intel® AMT enabling infrastructure that extends fully featured Intel® AMT into the Cloud and on to Internet devices, outside of corporate networks. AMC is secure, mobility-optimized, and cost efficient Internet based platform for delivery of next generation management, security, and hardware-based Human-to-Machine (H2M) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) connectivity services. It serves as a bridge between any intelligent device/sensor that supports Intel® AMT and M2M/H2M applications, creating a cloud device out-of-band network.

AMC can efficiently service millions of fixed and mobile devices located around the globe. The platform is optimized for multi-tenant operation, however, it can be public, private, or partially private. Public AMC offers security and flexibility without incurring high costs. Private AMC is deployed on client’s premises or public clouds, allowing greater flexibility and customization.


  • Secure, over the Internet “Zero-Touch” or host-based device provisioning, including bulk and self-provisioning;

  • Multi-channel - multiple service providers or data consumers can leverage out-of-band (OOB) over the Internet access to a single device, providing or receiving services each in its respective domain. Ultimate control always remains with the device owner/administrator.

  • Web-based private portal where administrators can manage device provisioning and control access by various participants to the OOB channel of groups of devices. Web portal also includes other automation.

  • Geo-optimization - AMC can automatically find and connect a device to the nearest available gateway. Device can be re-provisioned to another gateway “on-the-fly”. This feature helps maintain connection quality of mobile devices when transferring large amounts of data. If a device location changes, AMC can issue an alert that can be used to implement a processing logic. Out-of-band geo-sensing does not require OS and works even when the device is powered off.

  • End-to-end secured connectivity with certificates management throughout the device life-cycle.

AMC provides APIs and supports full-featured Intel® AMT SDK that can be used to create new smart-hardware networks, security, and management solutions. AMC truly cloud technologies can help reduce capital and operating costs significantly (up to 98%), and create new vibrant software and service solutions using Intel® Active Management Technology today, in the new era of the Internet of Things.

1 Features enabled by Intel® Active Management Technology (Intel® AMT) require an enabled chipset. Intel AMT may not be available or certain capabilities may be limited when connecting wirelessly, on battery power, sleeping, hibernating, or powered off. Over the Internet provisioning may require activation of certain BIOS and/or ME Engine functionality.

2 Out-of-band device connection is shared by multiple service providers (out-of-band channel users). Specific functionality can only be used by one service provider at a time.

Intel® AMT may not be available or certain capabilities may be limited when connecting wirelessly, on battery power, sleeping, hibernating, or powered off.

KVM requirements:

1) KVM Remote Control feature must be enabled in the BIOS/MEBx (note: some OEMs disable these features by default).
2) Have Intel® Core™ i5 vPro™ or Intel® Core™ i7 vPro™ processor with embedded Intel® Integrated Graphics (systems that also have alternative graphics, must be switched to Intel® card). Other graphics cards are not supported (note: not all Intel® Core™ i5 vPro™ and Intel® Core™ i7 vPro™ processors support integrated graphics or KVM Remote Control.
