Computer Shutdown

Deter computer theft and protect
your assets by remotely disabling stolen computers.

Many companies these days are increasingly becoming victims of internal and external theft of their mobile assets, and about 80% of such incidents involve their mobile computers. Besides the information stored on the hard drive, a stolen laptop usually has more market value then a PDA or a cell phone and is much harder to trace and recover. There is a good reason why many companies are worried about the safety of their laptops and desktops. Cases of computer crime and identity theft resulting from stolen computers are steadily on the rise. Besides the possible loss or compromise of your company or private data, other costly factors include the replacement of stolen hardware and software, loss of employee productivity, and the cost of incident recovery itself. To discourage computer theft, and most importantly internal computer theft, you need to have technology on your side. Technology that will make a stolen computer literally unusable thus having no resale value.

Deactivate a Stolen Computer

The technology you need is here. Aside from the ability to remotely retrieve and delete your sensitive information, with True Security™ Mobile you can also permanently deactivate a stolen computer. It is very simple. Just login to your account, open Incident Response Policy, and select "Computer Shutdown". Now if your computer goes missing you can remotely deactivate it and the thief will not be able to start it again. In addition to other incident response actions such as, remote file encryption or retrieval, confirmed data delete, or tracking computer location, you can choose to execute the remote shutdown option. We usually however, recommend you use this option as a last resort. Once your computer is off, we will not be able to trace the thief. To recover your computer we need it to be working, so we can track its location and the location of the thief. The first thing we recommend you to do is to retrieve and delete all your sensitive files and to notify police and SafeFrontier that your computer is stolen. We will immediately try to locate and recover it. You can also choose to deactivate your computer at anytime or set the policy to retrieve/delete or encrypt your data and then deactivate the computer. The thief will not be able to restart it unless you remove the block by logging into your account and setting a flag that computer was retrieved. Once the retrieved computer connects to the internet, it will be able to boot again.

Prevent Unauthorized Use

Stolen computers almost always connect to the internet in just a matter of few days but what happens if your computer doesn't? Can it still be shut down, so the thief will not be able to use or sell your laptop? The answer is yes. True Security™ Computer Shutdown allows you to not only remotely deactivate your computer but also set the Incident Response policy so that, if your computer does not find an internet connection, it will prompt the user to enter a password. If the user does not provide a password it will execute any preset incident response actions you choose such as, information encryption, data delete, remote message, as well as "no connect" or remote computer shutdown. You can also set a "no activity" period. With this option set, if the computer does not connect to the internet in the specified number of days, it will be permanently switched off. You can manage all these settings remotely, including assigning a password the user must enter to abort the "no connect" incident response actions.

With True Security™ Mobile, if you are traveling where the internet may not be available and your computer happens to be stolen, you can still protect it. This powerful functionality gives you the capability to prevent unauthorized use of your computer even if it never connects to the internet. If your computer is on the other side of the world; if you forgot to log off or shut down your computer at the end of the day; if you left your computer unattended while it was on; or if it happens to be lost or stolen, you can make it completely unusable for the thief and practically worthless.

Manage Leased Computers

Another important application of True Security™ Computer Shutdown is managing your computer lease. Once a lease contract has expired and the computer is not returned, you can active remote shutdown. As soon as that computer connects to the internet it will be permanently switched off. After the lease expiration date it will be completely unusable. This important capability will give you actual control over your leased or borrowed computers. You will extend your reach to the assets outside of your physical custody and will be able to effectively enforce your polices and contracts without any difficulty.
